the question I seem to always get asked is, "When is it legal for me to call customers that owe me money?" Most people think that because this person owes them money, they can call them anytime at all! Seriously, when I explain to people that there are only certain times you can call and things you can do, they are so surprised. It amazes me at how frequently this happens.
The Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA) allows you to call someone who owes you money after 8 a.m. and before 9 p.m. local time at the customers location. A good idea is to have a map on the wall with the time zones highlighted in different colors so you know when it is 8 a.m. where your customer is and you don't violate any laws.
If you know that those times are not convenient to the customer, you can ask them for another time to call. DOCUMENT all conversations, date, time, who you spoke with, why they said you could call at the different time. An example may be the shift they work at their job, and maybe 7 a.m. is better for them.
