Avoiding Bad Checks
No one wants to receive a bad check, but what can you, the business owner, do to avoid receiving a bad check from a customer?

Some things you should make sure of when accepting a check as payment:

  1. Make sure the name and address is imprinted on the check.
  2. Check for todays date.
  3. Compare the ID picture with the person writing the check.
  4. Compare signature with ID signature.
  5. Ask for a physical address if a PO box is listed.

When you accept a check as a form of payment from a customer, you are trusting them to make good on it and to have the funds available. When you accept a check remember what is important:

  • The Check
  • The ID
  • The Person

Do NOT accept two-party checks
Do NOT accept starter checks.
Do NOT accept unsigned checks.
Do NOT accept prewritten personal checks.
ALWAYS check ID.
DO NOT let the check writer rush or distract you.

Remember that accepting a check as payment is a privilege extended by you!

Take these precautions and lower the nuber of bad checks you receive.
