Go Right for the Decision Maker!

Know More: Creating a Credit Policy, I have past due customers, what do I do?, Making Collection Calls, What makes a Good Collector?

If you are serious about getting paid, don't talk to the person who answers the phone or the salesman or anyone else. Ask for the owner of the company. Bring the past due amount to his personal attention and ask him or her to take care of it immediately. You have a much better chance of getting paid if you pass by the gatekeeper and go right for the decision maker.

The owner may even be the person who filled out the credit application, but not always. Most owners will feel embarrassed that you brought this to their attention which results in you getting paid. I have worked places and with clients who know that once this happens, the "boss" or owner lets A/P know to always pay that companies bills on time.

There have also been occasions where I have had to call the owner of a company for a long time, so this doesn't always work. It works more often than not and I can recommend it.
