How can I Spot a "Problem Check"?
There are some things you can look for when you accept checks as a form of payment. These "clues" can help you spot a problem or potentially "bad" check and help you avoid any fees or problems.

Some things to look for when accepting checks that should alert you that something is wrong are:

  • Checks that have a number under 300.
  • Checks that do not have a phone number imprinted on them.
  • If the address is typed or written by hand.
  • No photo ID.
  • Out of state checks.
  • Checks made out for more than the amount due.
  • Two-party checks.
  • The check number is handwritten, stamped or typed.
  • Loose checks not in a register.
These are just some of the things you and your credit department can keep an eye out for and question if someone tries to give you a check with any of these problems.  You may still accept the check, but you might want to research it a bit before you do.

You can call the bank it is drawn on to make sure there are sufficient funds and that the account is still active for example.
