Some things to look for when accepting checks that should alert you that something is wrong are:
- Checks that have a number under 300.
- Checks that do not have a phone number imprinted on them.
- If the address is typed or written by hand.
- No photo ID.
- Out of state checks.
- Checks made out for more than the amount due.
- Two-party checks.
- The check number is handwritten, stamped or typed.
- Loose checks not in a register.
You can call the bank it is drawn on to make sure there are sufficient funds and that the account is still active for example.
