How can I Spot a "Problem Check"?

There are some things you can look for when you accept checks as a form of payment. These "clues" can help you spot a problem or potentially "bad" check and help you avoid any fees or problems.

Some things to look for when accepting checks that should alert you that something is wrong are:

Checks that have a number under 300.
Checks that do not have a phone number imprinted on them.
If the address is typed or written by hand.
No photo ID.
Out of state checks.
Checks made out for more than the amount due.
Two-party checks.
The check number is handwritten, stamped or typed.
Loose checks not in a register.

These are just some of the things you and your credit department can keep an eye out for and question if someone tries to give you a check with any of these problems. You may still accept the check, but you might want to research it a bit before you do.

You can call the bank it is drawn on to make sure there are sufficient funds and that the account is still active for example.
