Communications with a Debtor/Customer

Know More: Bad Checks, Creating a Credit Policy, Debt Collection Letters, Fair Debt Collection Practices Act, Making Collection Calls, What makes a Good Collector?

I say in my title, Debtor/Customer. This is because a past due customer is what business owners normally call a debtor. A debtor is a person who owes you money. People do not like to be called debtors, even if they become one.

Some business owners will refer to them as debtors only when they have decided not to do business with them anymore. In the law, the word consumer is used rather than debtor.

When you are trying to collect money from someone, you may communicate with them between 8 a.m. and 9 p.m. in the debtors time zone. You can set up other arrangements if the debtor agrees to them. Such as, if they tell you that they work nights and sleep days and want you to call at midnight, because that is when they are available. If you make this kind of an arrangement, take notes that include the date, time and circumstances.

You can call a debtor at work unless their employer prohibits such communications.

Remember to always be courteous and polite to be successful.
