Working conditions for debt collectors vary from agency to agency. Some debt collectors work in call centers, offices, out of their homes, or vehicles. In-house and accounts receivable collectors normally work in an office environment. Collectors that work for third-party collection agencies might work in an office or call center environment.
Depending on what type of collector you are you might spend a lot of time on the phone, or traveling to pick up payments or merchandise. No matter what type of collector you are, the work will be stressful. Debtors can be confrontational. No matter how much you stress this to a potential collection employee, they never understand until the do the job. It is always worse than you think it will be and this contributes to the high turnover rate with debt collectors.
Another thing that contributes to the high turnover rate with debt collectors is the lack of training. When you put a collector on the end of a phone with an angry customer and you haven’t trained that collector properly, how can you expect them to successfully handle the call, collect any money and know and follow the law? You can’t, but this happens every day.
