Business owner weighs in on officer's role in debt collection

I ran across an article in the The Star that was quite interesting.  They wrote about a local business owner who was having trouble getting paid from one of their customers so they contacted the police, who then contacted the debtor in order to obtain payment for the business.

In my experience this had only been done with a bad check, but a Midlothian business owner said he went to police for help in collecting a debt from one of his customers because there was "no other way" to collect the money.

What od you think of this practice?

Have any of you done this and what were the results?

Michelle, you have stated in several articles that when customers don't pay, it is not because they don't want to but usually because they can't. Keeping this in mind, what good would it do to send the police to collect a payment if the person cannot pay? How does that work? Does the officer stay at the person's home until they collect? Or do they take the debtor to jail if he/she fails to pay? I understand the need to collect, I just think this is a very drastic way to accomplish that goal.

Kimberlee,
I would say alot of debtor's dont want to pay and try to evade the debt in any way they can but also there are those debtors who have circumstances come up that cause them to be unable to pay, such as divorce, job loss or medical problems. I don't know if it would do any good to send the police, though in the above article this person convinced his local police to do this! I have never used this practice, so I cannot advise you on it.
I agree it is drastic which is why I wanted to share this with you!

Drastic indeed! Thanks for posting this, Michelle.

Very cool production! I've been studying how to do the same and I WILL get to your level someday! Keep up the good work!

Proper focus on loans is important to track the customer responses and debt payments by the financial institutions.
