For anyone trying to collect money from a past due customer, getting your envelope opened is always a challenge. Most collection notices look like just that, a computer generated collection notice that ends up in the trash without being opened.
Try not to use "form" letters when you send out a dunning notice, you want to assign a percentage of importance to each aspect of your collection effort, including the envelope and the letter inside.
Assigning important to each element of your correspondence is not easy but remember that when your customer looks at your envelope, it represents 100% of your effort UNTIL and IF you can compell them to open the letter. If the envelope is thrown in the trash before being opened, the entire mailing, 100%, is lost.
Your envelope has two purposes:
1. To get iteself opened.
2. To keep the contents from spilling out.
Something to remember is that at the moment of arrival, your envelope is 100% of the mailing and once it is opened, it is 0% as your letter takes over.
TIP: Use irresistable one-liners to get your envelope opened, but don't violate any disclosure laws.
