NFL coach Bill Belichick and McLauren F1 racing team fined for spying

Who is going to want to play the Patriots now?

“This episode represents a calculated and deliberate attempt to avoid longstanding rules designed to encourage fair play and promote honest competition in the playing field” according to NFL commissioner Roger Goodell.

No matter if you play sports, build buildings, clean houses or collect money, there are always rules or laws designed to encourage fair play and promote honesty.  Having been a bill collector for 18 years, I am well aware of this and how many don’t pay attention to those rules or laws.

The pressure to “win” or make more money drives some people to cheat because they feel that is the only way they can get ahead.  If you are good at what you do, no matter what the rules or laws, you can get ahead based on your merits and you don’t have to cheat to do it.

I did it and know many people who do. The people who cheat give the rest of us in that particular industry a bad name and a bad reputation as a whole.  If a company doesn’t have a code of ethics and doesn’t pay attention to any rules, who wants to play with them?  As a business owner you know that when you try to collect from your customers you need to follow your states laws and the FDCPA.  If you don’t or if you deal with a collection agency that doesn’t, well then, we would put you in the same category as Belichick.

New England Patriots head football coach Bill Belichick listens to one of many questions he refused to answer on accusations the Patriots illegally filmed New York Jets defensive signals from coaches on the sideline during the Patriots season opening victory against the Jets during a media availability in Foxborough, Mass., Thursday morning, Sept. 13, 2007. The NFL is investigating those charges. (AP Photo/Stephan Savoia)

It's McLaren...not McLauren! And they weren't fined for spying.... blog about business, don't bother with things you know nothing about.

Thanks for the corrections, davek. Actually, this story holds many lessons for businesses. Thanks to Michelle for covering it. My favorite quote from her: "If you are good at what you do, no matter what the rules or laws, you can get ahead based on your merits and you don’t have to cheat to do it."
