When people can’t pay you because of job loss or affects of the economy, what can you do? Make sure that even when things get tough that you follow the laws in your state to collect the money that is owed to you. Even though you are a business owner be aware of the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act and treat your customers as you would like to be treated.
Things not to do:
- Do not berate or belittle the customer.
- Do not swear or yell or use foul language.
- Do not call and hang up.
- Do not hang a notice up in your office or store that they owe you money.
- Do not extend them any credit until they pay you and then take cash up front only.
